A very Special Quilt for a Very Special Lady

I had the pleasure to quilt a very unique quilt to hang in the The Beth Hillel Temple.  Judith Warren orchestrated this project and I asked if I could share it with you.  I also asked Judith to write a paragraph for me regarding the project. 

"The Beth Hillel Temple Quilting project began in September of 2011, during an intergenerational retreat of the congregation. Rabbi Dena Feingold and 74 adults and children made squares and triangles that were incorporated into the quilt. The theme of the quilt centered on Jewish community and the natural and spiritual themes discussed at the retreat. All of the children in religious school spent a day creating their contributions to the quilt. Over 14 volunteers from the Temple in Kenosha, Wisconsin, helped to put the quilt together, during quilting sessions at the Temple and in private homes over a ten month period. Quilt organizer Judith Warren then asked Quilts by Barb to finish both quilts, the larger one, and the smaller explanatory quilt which tells the history of the quilt project and names the participants. The quilt was hung in the Temple and dedicated with a beautiful musical ceremony attended by many of the quilters on Sunday, September 9, 2012, almost a year to the date after it was started."

Hand Dyeing Workshop

We held our spring annual Hand Dyeing Workshop on June 18, 2012, at Lapacek's Orchard near Poynette, Wisconsin. It was a bit hot and windy but a good time was had by all.

Farmer's Wife Quilt

The Northeast Iowas Quilt Guild has been working on the Farmer's Wife Quilt.  I finished quilting Carolyn's quilt today.  It is wonderful!

This is a full view of the quilt. 

All the blocks in the border were 6 inch blocks set on  point.  I quilted a crosshatching in each of the blocks and a feather in the setting triangles.

This is the center of the quilt.  Each of these blocks measures at 3 inches.  I did a crosshatching in each of these tiny blocks to make it a mini of the 6 inch blocks.

This shows the crosshatching in the blocks.  The sashing strips and squares each have an X sewn through them.  The quilt has wool batting so there the quilting definition shows nicely on the actual quilt.

The setting triangles in the "mini" part of the center is quilted with a small feather triangle.

Carolyn has made an heirloom quilt.  It is beautiful.

Bear Paw Quilt

Just thought I would share a few pictures of a wonderful quilt I just finished quilting this morning. 

This is a close up of the center.  I wish you could see the quilting but I just couldn't get it to show.  I used a modern feather design in the large center block and then cross hatched the rest of the center medallion.

The center was surrounded by a larger bear paw block.  I used the same modern feather pattern here.

 

The borders had a wonderful pieced diamond.  I used a coordinating modern feather in these and then crosshatched on the outsides of the diamonds.  Was very effective.

2012 Hand Dyeing Workshop

When: Monday, June 18, 2012,   9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Where: Lapacek’s Orchard, N1959 Kroncke Rd, Poynette, WI

PLEASE NOTE:  This is a NEW location. 

If you’re a beginner or an advanced dyer, this workshop is for you.  The format is very relaxed.  Each participant chooses her (or his) own colors, materials and methods.  We provide help as needed.  Advanced dyers will be able to jump right in and start dyeing while beginners learn the basic procedures to get started.  We will be working outside (or in a LARGE shed in case of rain) and there will be LOTS of room.  You can dye as much or as little as you’d like.

A few of the topics that will be covered:

The basic procedures involved in dyeing cotton fabrics using fiber reactive dyes

• Color gradations within a color family
• Color gradations from color family to color family
• Color wheels
• Techniques to create visual texture and one of a kind fabrics
• Learn how to make "convergence fabrics" just like Barb and Diane

Interested in dyeing things other than cotton fabric?

• We will have blank white T shirts in many different styles and sizes for sale the day of the workshop.
• We will have a selection of onesies, dresses and rompers for your little ones.
• We will also have PFD fabric for sale by the yard or by the bolt.
• Interested in trying to dye silk? We will have some!
• Want to dye fibers for embellishment?  We’ll have some of them, too.
  
  Bring other items from home and we will help you dye them. Think old table linens, crocheted doilies, kid's socks. The fun is just starting! The methods we use work with cellulose (plant based) materials or silk. No wool.  (That’s an entirely different process.)  Think cotton, linen, rayon.  Blends will also work as long as they include some cellulose fibers.  If you’re in doubt, bring it along.  We’ll advise you.

Workshop cost: $55

The workshop fee includes all instruction for the day and lunch.  Supply cost will be $9.00 for each yard of cotton PFD.  This includes the fabric, dyes and other supplies needed.  If you purchase other items or bring them from home, we will weigh them and charge for dye supplies according to the weight of the items.

Supplies will also be available for purchase if you’re interested in dyeing at home.

A $25 nonrefundable deposit will be paid at time of registration to reserve your spot. The balance is due the day of the workshop.

Linda's Quodlibet Quilt

Judy Hasheider of Quilt with Judy designed the pattern Quodlibet.  The quilt is normally made with a black or dark sashing or leading fabric. 

Linda changed her sashing fabric to white and used an orange color theme.  The fabric choices throughout her quilt are amazing.  I recognize a number of the fabrics as hand dyed fabrics from Quilts by Barb.

Linda said this quilt just continued to grow.  She added two pieced borders and two plain borders.  When quilting the quilt, I treated the inner pieced border as paft of the inside of the quilt.  I used a peach colored thread throughout all the quilting on the quilt.  It shows, but blends nicely with both the inside of the quilt and the borders.  This quilt has very sharp geometric designs so I used modern, fun circular designs in the quilting. 

I just kept taking pictures of this quilt!  There was so much fun stuff to see.  I just love the colors.

Mary Kay's Road to Retreat Quilt

Finished quilting this quilt this morning.  It was constructed by Mary Kay, starting at our 2011 Quilt Retreat Getaway Weekend.  Mary Kay is a fairly new quilter and did an excellent job.  The pattern was an original pattern by Diane Lapacek, our teacher for all our Quilt Retreat Getaway Weekends.

 Great job by Mary Kay on the piecing and Diane on the designing.  I did "Bare Bones" quilting on the quilt and it looks great. 

Mary Kay got a 10% discount on the quilting.  This is a perk you get from attending our retreats.  All quilts started at our retreats from our retreat patterns get a discount on the quilting.

Mystery Monday - The Final Step in A Judy Hopkins Mystery

I hope everyone had a fabulous and safe holiday! I’m sure you’ve all been anxiously awaiting the final step to this fun mystery.

Join the rows to make a BUCKEYE BEAUTY quilt, turning every other row upside-down to form the pattern.

I have included pictures of the mystery quilts that were finished at the 2009 Quilts By Barb Quilt Retreat. I have yet to finish mine (the one that I’ve been showing in the other instructions) but no worries – I’ll be sure to blog about it when I do! I also do not know who’s quilt is who’s so if you would like credit please just leave a comment with your name and the corresponding letter that goes with your quilt top!

Add 6” borders in your choice of fabric. 1-1/3 yards of fabric will yield 7 selvage-to-selvage strips, 6-1/2” wide, for seamed borders. For borders cut from the lengthwise grain, you would need 1-1/2 yards of fabric.

TO ADD BORDERS: Seam the strips as necessary to make strips long enough to border the quilt; press seams open.

Measure the length of the quilt at the center, from raw edge to raw edge. Cut two border strips to that measurement and join them to the sides of the quilt with a 1/4” seam, matching the ends and centers and easing the edges to fit. Then measure the width of the quilt at the center, including the border pieces that you just added. Cut two border strips to the measurement and join them to the top and bottom of the quilt, matching ends and centers and easing as necessary.

This is the quilt that Diane finished as a sample for the Mystery Quilt. She decided to to her borders in a way that she deemed fit for the quilt. That’s the beauty about borders…you can do whatever you want! To see more pictures just click HERE!

The Travel Center in Belmont, Wisconsin

I would like to introduce you to The Travel Center in Belmont, Wisconsin, the home of our 2009 Quilt Retreat Getaway Weekend.

Pictured at left, is the conference center from the outside. This is where we will be sewing for the weekend.

It is connected to the Baymont Inn and Suites (right) where rooms will be available.

The cost for the rooms are:

Friday and Saturday evenings: $78.84 per night including tax

Sunday evening: $65.70 including tax

This price is good for one to four people per room. It also includes a continental breakfast in the morning.

Rooms may be booked by calling directly to the hotel at 608-762-6900. Mention that you are with the Quilts by Barb quilt retreat to receive these rates. If you have any problems, please either email me at Quiltsybarb@tds.net or call me at 608-994-2821 and I would be glad to help with your reservation.

This is a picture of the inside of the convention center where we will be quilting. I don't think it will be quite as tidy as in the picture, but you get the idea of the size. The room is very large; it was set up to serve 450 people when I viewed it, but it is still very warm and cozy.

This will be the perfect setting for a group of women quilting their hearts out!

All meals will be on your own for the 2009 Quilt Retreat.

The Travel Center does include a family restaurant just across the parking lot. The meals are very reasonable priced and the food is excellent. If you are staying at the hotel, don't forget the FREE continental breakfast which includes some hot food.

Belmont is small but there are a few other places to eat or get careout food. We will only be a few miles from Platteville where there are a number of dining choices as well as a Quilt Shop!! More about that in another post.

New blog for Quilt Retreat Information

Greeting quilters and quilt retreaters,

I am starting this blog as a information source for Quilt Retreat Geataway Weekends that are hosted by Quilts by Barb. I plan to update this blog regularly with new information on both our upcoming 2009 Quilt Retreat Getaway Weekend and on our previous retreats from past years. I will be including lots of photos, so if you attended one of our retreats and would like a photo or any information included, please email me and I would love to have it.

Diane Lapacek, our teacher for the past seven years, will also be including updates. She is working right now on sample quilts for 2009 and will be including pictures and other information here for you to see.

Please feel free to add to the page with comments. I would like this blog to be a place where our retreat participants can touch base with one another. I will continue to have my regular Quilts by Barb blog on my webpage and will refer back and forth between the two.
